Animal

Sodateru erasers are Sun-Star's shape-shifting animals. Each one starts as a clean block — a cat, a Shiba, a seal, or a pair of birds — with the character's face printed on the front. Every time you rub out a mistake the block wears down, the printed face creeps up, and the animal slowly turns into a different shape. Sun-Star's own line for the series says you only find out what yours becomes by using it.

Five erasers, three body types

The cat, Shiba and seal are the tall type: a 42 mm block with a flat top and a face at the bottom, which is what makes the change of shape so visible as the block shortens. The chick and pig arrive as a two-piece set of 21 mm cubes, one animal each, printed so the block keeps a face on every side as it wears. The PEANUTS set packs Snoopy and Woodstock together as two 21 mm cubes in a printed box. All of them are plain PVC erasers — the gimmick is the shape, not the rubber.

Sizes and materials follow Sun-Star's product pages for the Japanese Sodateru line. The 42 mm figures and the 21 mm cubes are different products in the same series, not the same eraser at different stages.

How the shape actually changes

Because the face is printed low on the block, the ears and outline are what erode first. A cat loses the points of its ears, the Shiba loses the curve of its head, the seal rounds off into a pebble. What is left after a few months is a small, soft-cornered block with the face still legible — closer to a worn stone than a stationery item. That is the point of the series, and it means no two look the same after a school term.

Using them without ruining them

  • They erase graphite pencil the way a standard PVC eraser does; they are not intended for ink or coloured pencil.
  • The printed face is on the surface, so heavy rubbing or scrubbing with a finger will fade it faster than actual erasing will.
  • The 42 mm figures have a lot of body below the face, so they sit upright on a desk without a holder.
  • The two-piece sets are small enough to disappear into a pencil case — worth keeping the PET case if you want the printed box intact.

Who they suit

These are the erasers people keep after the mistake is gone: good for students who like a desk object that changes, for journalers who want a small animal on the page edge, and as a low-cost gift that is more interesting than a plain block. Collectors tend to buy the set rather than one, since the fun is comparing how each animal wears down.

Keep exploring

The whole series sits in our Sun-Star range, and as drawing tools they also belong to art supplies and cute school supplies. Two things worth pairing with them: the Sun-Star Peronimal animal pens, which use the same trick of a small animal doing a practical job, and the Sun-Star cassette tape cutter for keeping a journal desk tidy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Sodateru eraser?

A: A Sun-Star eraser shaped like an animal, with the face printed low on the block. As you erase, the block wears down and the outline changes, so the animal slowly turns into a different shape.

Q: Which animals are in this listing?

A: Five: a black-and-white cat (Hachiware), a Shiba Inu, a seal, a chick-and-pig two-piece set, and a PEANUTS set with Snoopy and Woodstock.

Q: How big are they?

A: The cat, Shiba and seal are W21 × H21 × D42 mm and weigh about 26 g each. The chick-and-pig set is two W21 × H21 × D21 mm cubes, and the PEANUTS set is two 21 × 21 × 21 mm cubes.

Q: What are they made of?

A: PVC, made in China. The single-animal versions come in a PET case.

Q: Do they erase well, or are they just a novelty?

A: They are ordinary PVC erasers for graphite pencil, so they clean a line the way a standard block does. The novelty is the printed face and the way the shape changes.

Q: Is the Snoopy version part of the same series?

A: Yes. It is the PEANUTS edition of the Sodateru eraser, packed as Snoopy and Woodstock in one printed box.
