ALTA

ALTA is a small Japanese paper-goods maker working in vulcanized fiber — wood pulp pressed into a hard, springy sheet that survives being carried around in a bag. Its best-known line turns that material into bookmarks shaped like cats and everyday objects.

This collection gathers the ALTA pieces we stock, starting with the Hugging Cat Bookmark that hangs from the page edge by its front paws. New designs are added as they arrive from Japan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of bookmarks are in this ALTA collection?
A: These are shaped paper bookmarks made in Japan by ALTA. Each one is cut in the outline of a cat and printed on both sides: face and stripes on the front, arched back, tail and paw pads on the back. You slide the cat into the page so its paws hook over the edge and its long body hangs outside the closed book. Three designs are stocked here — Chatora (brown tabby), Kutsushita (grey cat with white socks) and Sabashiro (silver tabby with a white chest).
Q: Are these printable or DIY cat bookmarks, or a real product?
A: They are a finished product, not a download or a printable template. Most results for "cat bookmark" are DIY projects, SVGs or colouring pages, so it is worth saying plainly: these arrive as real bookmarks, individually packed in a printed sleeve, made by a Japanese manufacturer. No printer, glue or cutting is involved.
Q: How does the bookmark stay in the book?
A: The body of the cat is the marker. Tuck the upper part between two pages at the point where you stopped reading, so the paws catch on the page edge and the body and tail hang outside the book. The sheet is thin and springy, so it grips without clips or adhesive and survives being taken in and out repeatedly.
Q: What is vulcanized fiber, and why use it for a bookmark?
A: Vulcanized fiber is a dense sheet made by pressing cellulose fibre together under heat and pressure. It is thin enough to slip between pages, stiff enough to hold its shape, and flexible enough to be handled often — and being plant-based, it replaces the plastic sheet normally used for shaped bookmarks. It is not waterproof; the maker does not publish a water-resistance rating.
Q: Is an ALTA cat bookmark a good gift for a cat lover?
A: It is one of the few cat-themed gifts that gets used rather than displayed. It is small and easy to wrap, it works for a reader who already has too many notebooks, and it is specific enough to feel chosen rather than picked at random.
