Luddite

Luddite is a Japanese label built around two things: drafting tools and the cases that carry them. Twenty-one pieces below — Kurashiki No. 8 canvas pen cases, Okayama denim cut from random patchwork, vegetable-tanned MAYA leather, and the THIS INDUSTRIAL aluminum desk range. Every model is described by measurement, because those numbers, not the letters in the name, decide what fits.

Sizes are where most buyers stall: in the Boat range, Small is longer than Large, and both MAYA Trilateral sizes are 192 mm. Our field guide to Luddite pen cases and drafting pencils compares the models side by side, with the limitations owners report in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many pens can the Bendy Pen Case hold?
A: About five, in five hidden sleeves that only appear once you unfasten the case and open it flat to 180°. It measures W195 × H80 × D30 mm and adds two zippered compartments for notes, stickers, a slim ruler or scissors. It is a compact carry rather than a large-capacity roll; anyone routinely carrying ten pens is better served by the Writer's Pen Case.

Q: Can the Canvas × MAYA Bendy 4+1 hold a thick fountain pen?
A: No. The 4+1 sheath is 15 mm thick at 105 × 152 × 15 mm, and the 2+1 is 65 × 152 × 15 mm, so a thick-barrel fountain pen will not fit despite the plus-one in the name. That plus-one counts a nominal slot rather than a usable one. Measure the barrel diameter against 15 mm before ordering.

Q: Will a 15 cm ruler fit in the MAYA Leather Trilateral pen case?
A: Yes. The body was widened on purpose so a 15 cm ruler goes in flat, and there are three internal pockets for ruler, notepad and clips. Small and Medium are both 192 mm long and differ only in width and depth — 192 × 48 × 32 mm against 192 × 50 × 38 mm — so choose by what goes in the side pockets, not by the letter.

Q: What is the difference between the Bendy Pen Case and the Denim Bendy Case Essential?
A: Fabric and interior. The canvas Bendy is Kurashiki No. 8 cotton at W195 × H80 × D30 mm, with two zippered compartments and five hidden sleeves. The Denim Bendy Essential is W190 × H90 × D30 mm, cut from Okayama denim, with a zippered pocket on each side; its pen loops suit pens that have clips. Both open flat to 180°, and neither takes bulky items such as a glue stick.

Q: Does the TechDraw2 tip wobble when you write?
A: No. An O-ring seats inside the cap and reviewers report no shake or rattle. The pencil is 143.1 mm long, 8.4 mm in diameter and 19 g, with a long lead pipe and a stepped tip that keeps the line visible. The complaint that does recur runs the other way: 8.4 mm feels slim to anyone used to a chunky grip.

Q: Can I choose the denim panels on a Luddite denim pen case?
A: No. Denim cases are cut from random patchwork, so no two are identical and a specific colour combination cannot be requested. One reviewer received plain, striped, spotted and distressed panels in a single case. If an exact look matters, buy where the individual unit is photographed, or treat the variation as part of the product.

Q: Where are Luddite's canvas and denim pen cases made?
A: In Japan. The canvas is Kurashiki No. 8, a cloth woven in Japan since 1888, and the denim is Okayama denim; the Bendy line is 100% cotton. Leather pieces use vegetable-tanned hide, and the aluminum pieces in the THIS INDUSTRIAL range are made in Japan. Check individual product pages, because a few items, such as the LW17 wallet, are made in China.

Q: Is the EVER DRAW wood barrel slippery?
A: No. Owners of the walnut version report no slipping, and the black matte knurled version is described the same way. The chrome and silver finishes are the ones reported as slick — one owner compared the feel to holding a tube of ice — so grip here is a finish question rather than a model flaw.
