A cat's journey, one roll at a time

The Cat's Journey is BGM's illustrated washi tape line about a cat moving through quiet places: a station at night, a seaside wall, a wheat field, a narrow back street, a flowering meadow and a garden where the light comes through the leaves. Each roll is printed across its full width, so a single strip shows a complete scene rather than a repeating fragment, and each is finished with foil stamping — gold on four designs, holographic on two — that picks up light along the edges of the artwork.

At twenty millimetres wide the rolls are wide enough to use as a border or a band across a page, and they still tear cleanly by hand for smaller pieces. Because the illustration is continuous, one strip can run along the edge of a spread and another can be cut in half lengthwise for a thin accent line.

Places this tape earns its keep

Journal and planner spreads are the obvious home for it, especially travel diaries and monthly pages where a small illustrated band sets the mood. The continuous artwork also suits envelope seals, gift wrapping accents, bookmark edges and the inside covers of notebooks. Because the adhesive is low-tack, tape used to block out a page for a layout can be lifted and moved without tearing fibres.

Good to know

  • Foil is a surface layer. Rubbing it with an eraser or pressing hard with a ballpoint will dull the shine, so keep pen work to the unfoiled areas.
  • Washi tape is not a packing or masking tape: it is thin, decorative and low-tack, so it will not hold a parcel shut or protect a surface from paint.
  • Store rolls flat or on a holder, away from direct sun, so the printed colours stay even.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is foil washi tape?

A: Foil washi tape is printed Japanese paper tape with a thin metallic foil layer applied to parts of the design. The base is the same low-tack washi paper used for ordinary decorative tape, so it tears by hand and lifts without damage, while the foil adds a metallic line that changes as the light moves across it.

Q: How wide and how long is each roll?

A: Each roll is 20 mm wide and 5 m long. That width is wide enough to read as a border or a band across a page but still narrow enough to tear into shorter pieces for small accents.

Q: Is the illustration continuous across one strip?

A: Yes. The Cat's Journey designs are printed across the full width of the roll as a complete scene, so one strip shows a station, a street or a garden rather than a fragment of a repeating motif. For very long pages, two strips butt together neatly because the scenes are drawn to the same horizon.

Q: Can I write on this tape?

A: You can write on the printed areas with a fine gel or ballpoint pen once the tape is stuck down, but avoid the foil: ink sits on the metallic surface and can be wiped off. If you want a handwritten label, use the plain edges of the artwork instead of the foil lines.

Q: Will it damage my journal if I move it?

A: Washi paper is low-tack, so on smooth paper it usually lifts cleanly and can be repositioned several times. On softer or textured paper the fibres may lift slightly, so press lightly first and only smooth it down fully once you are sure of the position.

Q: Which designs are gold and which are holographic?

A: Across the Wheat Fields, Afternoon in a Back Alley, A Field of Blooming Flowers and Sunlight Through the Leaves are gold foil. Starry Night and Messages from the Sea Breeze are holographic, so their foil shifts through colour rather than reading as a single warm metal.
